Sustainable biomaterials for biomedical applications
Docente: Alfredo Rondinella
Numero ore: 8
SSD: ING-IND/22
In recent decades, the biomedical field has witnessed remarkable progress in developing new and performing biomaterials, creating innovations aimed at enhancing the quality of life of patients. The focus on developing performing biomaterials has often overshadowed concerns about the sustainability of their manufacturing processes. However, there is now a growing recognition of the environmental aspects of these advancements. As a result, researchers are actively seeking sustainable alternatives for producing biomaterials without compromising their performance and biocompatibility.
This course aims to explore the intersection of biomaterials and sustainability delving into research, methodologies, and applications in this field. The first part of the course will define the prime characteristics of sustainable processes and the main factors influencing material biocompatibility. In the following section, the main advancements being made in this direction will be studied showing how to make biomaterials manufacturing processes more sustainable. Since sustainability and biocompatibility can sometimes be mutually exclusive, research efforts will be examined through examples that aim to reconcile these two crucial aspects of biomaterial development. These results will be compared with biomaterials produced through conventional processes, allowing students to acquire the necessary knowledge to assess the impact of biomaterials. Overall, this course aims to provide a foundation in biomaterials science and enable students to understand environmental and technological considerations involved in producing biomaterials. Students will gain the understanding and resources needed to actively contribute to the advancement of new, eco-friendly materials, within the biomedical field.
