Inverse eigenvalue problems and applications

Docente: Antonino Morassi
Numero ore: 8
SSD: ICAR/08

The purpose of the course is to present an elementary introduction to inverse problems to eigenvalues in one dimension. Mainly differential operators governing the infinite longitudinal vibrations of a beam consisting of elastic material will be discussed. Some applications of reconstructing the mass coefficient or stiffness of the beam from a finite number of eigenvalues are discussed.

Course content: Fundamentals of the direct eigenvalue problem. Classical uniqueness results of the inverse problem for Sturm-Liouville operators in canonical form: the Borg approach for symmetric potentials and extension to generic potentials. Mention of stability and local existence results. An inverse problem to eigenvalues for the bar in flexural vibrations. Inverse problems to eigenvalues with finite data and their applications.

Metodi didattici: lezioni frontali
