Nanoparticles in Composite Coatings

Coatings are widely used in different applications and with different aims: to protect metal parts working in aggressive environments, to functionalize surfaces, to decorate. There are different coatings materials: metals, ceramic, polymers or combinations of the above and thus a high number of technologies that can be used to coat a metallic part. The type of coating and the application technology are chosen based on the type of component and the desired performances. In the last decades, nanotechnologies have changed the way of considering materials and new routes have been open for research of innovative coatings containing different types of nano-particles with enhanced or unique properties. In this frame, electrodeposition, an old and well established technique for the production of metallic deposits has been reconsidered and a new research field has been opened for the production of nano-metal matrix composite coatings (n-MMCCs). Electrolytic codeposition is used to produce composite coatings by embedding particles, intentionally added to the plating bath, into a metal matrix in the course of an electrolytic deposition process. The type of both metal matrix and reinforcing material, the amount, the shape, the size and the distribution of the reinforcing material in the metal matrix can be chosen based on the desired properties of the MMCCs. The incorporated particles do not modify the coatings properties just by their physical existence due to their intrinsic properties but also by modifying the structure of the matrix during the coating growth influencing the overall performances. This course aims to give an overview on the basic concepts and mechanisms of the metallic coatings electrochemical deposition and the influence of different types of particles co-deposition on the development, microstructure and properties of the composite coatings.
